Drip Cakes Are Back — And Easier Than Ever
The iconic drip cake is having a major comeback and honestly? It never should have left. Here's how to nail it every single time!
Why Colour Mill Chocolate Cake Drip is a Game Changer
Traditional drip cakes required melting and tempering chocolate, getting the temperature just right, and hoping for the best. Colour Mill's Cake Drip comes pre-colored and ready to use straight from the bottle — just warm it slightly and pour. It flows beautifully, sets with a gorgeous glossy finish, and comes in a range of stunning colors. It's honestly the secret weapon every home baker needs!

Step by Step
Let's Make That Drip! 🎂
Bake, Fill & Crumb Coat Your Cake
Bake your favorite cake recipe and let it cool completely. Level and stack your layers with buttercream, then apply a thin crumb coat all over the outside of the cake. This seals in any loose crumbs and gives you a clean base to work on.
Pop the crumb-coated cake in the fridge for at least 30 minutes until firm.
Apply a Smooth Buttercream Finish
Apply a generous final coat of white buttercream to the outside of your chilled cake. Use a bench scraper held at a slight angle against the side of the cake while slowly rotating your turntable to get that ultra-smooth finish. Smooth the top with an offset spatula.
Chill again for another 20–30 minutes. You want the buttercream to be really firm before adding the drip — this is the key to perfect drips!
Warm Your Colour Mill Cake Drip
Place your bottle of Colour Mill Cake Drip in a jug of warm water for a few minutes, or microwave it in short 10-second bursts until it reaches a pourable consistency. Give it a gentle stir. You want it fluid enough to drip but not so thin that it runs straight to the bottom.
Add the Drips Around the Edge 🍫
Using a squeeze bottle or a spoon, start at the top edge of your chilled cake and let small amounts of drip fall over the edge. Work your way around the cake, varying the length of the drips — some short, some long — for a natural, organic look. Don't overthink it! The slightly imperfect drips are what make it look so beautiful and handmade.
Once you've done all the drips around the edge, pour a small amount of drip onto the center of the top and spread it gently with an offset spatula to fill in the top.
Add Buttercream Swirls on Top 🌀
Once your drip has set (just a few minutes!), pipe rosette swirls around the top edge of the cake using a piping bag fitted with a 1M or 2D star tip. Start from the outside and swirl inward, releasing pressure as you lift. These swirls frame the top of the cake beautifully and give it that bakery-style finish.
Load on the Sprinkles! 🎉
This is the most fun part — sprinkle time! Press a generous border of sprinkles around the base of the cake while the buttercream is still slightly soft. Scatter more sprinkles between the swirls on top and add a few extra to the sides for a fun, festive look. Mix and match colors that complement your drip for maximum impact.
Add Your Topper & Show It Off! ✨
Pop in your cake topper, stand back, and marvel at what you just made. You just made a drip cake! Share it, photograph it, and most importantly — eat it. You totally earned it! 🎂
