🐰 How to Make a Bunny Bottom Cake (Step‑by‑Step)

Baking the Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F.
  2. Add your cake mix to a stand mixer (or large bowl).
  3. Pour in the water and vegetable oil.
  4. Mix on medium speed until the batter is smooth and fully combined.
  5. Grease your hemisphere pan with non‑stick spray.
  6. Fill the pan with batter, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top so it doesn’t overflow.
  7. Set the pan on a cookie sheet and place it in the oven.
  8. Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Once the cake is cool enough to handle, wrap it in plastic wrap and place it in the freezer for 30–60 minutes to firm up.
    • If you’re baking two cakes with one pan: level the first cake, remove it from the pan, wrap and freeze it, then bake the second cake.

Making the Fondant Decorations

  1. While the cake chills, knead 4 oz of white fondant until soft and smooth.
  2. Roll it out to about ½ inch thickness.
  3. Lay a piece of plastic wrap over the fondant, then use the oval/0 cutter to cut out two bunny feet. The plastic wrap helps create soft, rounded edges.
  4. Knead the remaining white fondant again and roll a slightly larger portion into a ball for the bunny tail.
  5. Color the leftover fondant with a few drops of pink gel color and knead until evenly tinted.
  6. Roll the pink fondant into 8 small balls2 larger ones for the foot pads and 6 smaller ones for the toes. Flatten them gently with your fingers.
  7. Attach the pink pieces to each foot using a tiny bit of water and a small brush.
  8. Set the feet and tail aside to dry.

Preparing the Cake for Decorating

  1. Remove the cake from the freezer and let it thaw slightly if it’s fully frozen.
  2. While it’s still in the pan, level the top using a serrated knife and the edge of the pan as your guide.
  3. Turn the cake out onto the 8-inch white cake board.
  4. Stir your buttercream until smooth.
  5. Add a scoop of buttercream to the top of the cake.
  6. Use an offset spatula to cover the entire cake in buttercream until no cake shows through. *For a super smooth finish: lightly mist the cake with water and glide your spatula over the surface. If the spatula sticks, mist again.
  7. Wipe any water off the board and freeze the cake for 15 minutes to firm up. *If making two cakes, frost both before tinting any buttercream green.

Adding the Grass & Decorations

  1. Tint the remaining buttercream with a few drops of green gel color until you reach your desired shade.
  2. Fit a piping bag with a grass tip. Trim the tip of the bag so the tip fits snugly.
  3. Remove the cake from the freezer and attach the bunny feet and tail.
  4. Fill the piping bag with green buttercream and pipe grass around the base of the cake and across the board.
  5. Sprinkle Easter egg sprinkles over the grass, then place two large royal icing Easter eggs at the front of the cake.

ENJOY!
