Fun DIY Edible School Supplies: Pencil-Shaped Treats & Book Cookies
•Posted on August 01 2025

Back-to-school season is here, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a little creativity—and a lot of sugar! Whether you're prepping sweet surprises for lunchboxes, classroom parties, or first-day gifts, these DIY edible school supplies are a fun way to bring smiles to kids (and teachers!) while flexing your baking muscles.
At Sweet Life Cake and Candy Supply, we have all the tools and toppers you need to turn simple cookies and fondant into charming pencil-shaped treats and edible mini books. These easy projects are perfect for beginner bakers, classroom parents, and anyone who loves to craft with frosting and fondant.
Project #1: Pencil Sugar Cookies
These colorful pencil-shaped cookies are a big hit with kids and make the perfect edible gift for teachers. You don’t need a custom cookie cutter—just use a rectangle cutter and trim one end to a point!
What You'll Need:
• Fondant tools and rolling mat
• Royal icing or buttercream in yellow, pink, silver, and tan
• Black edible marker or black royal icing for the pencil tip
• Optional: edible glitter or sanding sugar for sparkle!
How to Make:
1. Start with baked sugar cookies in a rectangular shape. Trim one end into a triangle point using a knife or triangle cutter.
2. Pipe a yellow rectangle to create the pencil body and let it dry slightly.
3. Add a pink frosting tip for the eraser, silver for the metal band, and tan for the wood point.
4. Use a black edible marker to draw in the pencil tip—or add a dab of black icing.
5. Let dry completely before packaging or stacking.
Project #2: Mini Book Cookies
Turn simple squares or rectangles into tiny edible notebooks or textbooks. These cookies are great for classroom goodie bags or as part of a themed back-to-school dessert tray.
What You'll Need:
• Square or rectangle cookie cutter
• Fondant in white, red, blue, and black
• Mini alphabet stamps or letter molds
How to Make:
6. Roll out fondant and cut it to match the size of your baked cookies.
7. Cover the top with a “book cover” in colored fondant (red, green, blue, etc.).
8. Use edible markers to draw title lines, faux pages on the sides, and even write fun phrases like “Math” or “Spelling.”
9. Optional: Add a 3D fondant bookmark or glue down a fondant apple topper for an extra flair.
Packaging & Presentation Ideas
• Place pencil and book cookies in clear treat bags with ribbon and a cute tag.
• Create a mini “Back to School Cookie Kit” to sell or gift with decorated and undecorated cookies, icing bags, and sprinkles.
• Use school-themed toppers to finish your presentation!
